Manam’s Must-Try Foods

Here’s what we’d recommend:

Crispy Pancit Palabok 

Pancit palabok is probably one of the many pocket picks I have, technically if it is on the menu, there is probably a 50% chance I’ll order it on the side. Rarely have I ordered palabok as a main dish. Manam’s pancit palabok, however, has a different approach to it that made the dish the star of the dining table. 

The dish was served separately, a plate that contains a tower of crispy fried noodles/pasta and a small pitcher filled with yellow goodness that makes the rest of the palabok. The servers then pour it over the noodles as it melts and mix until you are left with a hearty, golden palabok that looks like what you expected it to be.

Honestly, I thought that was just for show, why would you make a noodle/pasta crispy only to have it doused in wet sauce? That was the only question on my mind.

Why?

So I just took it in and had a forkful. It was actually really delicious. The noodles were still crispy after sitting there covered in the sauce for a while, and the sauce was heavenly as you’d expect in a restaurant that delivers one of a kind dishes. 

Etag Fried Rice

Nothing makes a highlander prouder than the delicious etag. However, there are just a handful of applications as well as dishes where you can fully utilize this precious ingredient. 

Manam’s etag fried rice is a simple yet mouth-watering dish that has taken the humble etag from an ingredient that heightens a dish to the forefront. The simple approach is one that I will definitely try at my hometown since it is that addicting. 

I truly adore this dish from the ground up. Nothing wrong with rice accompanied by the stong, salty goodness of etag.

House Crispy Sisig

Sisig is yet another dish that I adore. From its crunchy sizzling meats down to its juices and oils, there is nothing I wouldn’t want on my plate other than this. Heck, I would even lick the hotplate clean if my wife permits.

Personally, I have been around and have tasted different kinds of sisig prepared in a multitude of ways and throughout all of that, I have developed a decent preference on what the best sisig should taste, the texture as well as the sauces and how it’s prepared.

I personally love when a sisig is served on the hotplate with a few whole chilis pushed to the side and served with a freshly cracked egg on a piping hot, hotplate. The eggs provide a milky soft texture that contrasts the crunchy meat as well as being a decent sponge for the oils that have been mixed alongside the sauces. 

This makes every mouthful an explosion of flavor that I would enjoy chasing with a spoonful of rice. The chilis also give me the choice of eating it as is or with a little bit of spice.

I love spicy dishes as much as the next guy. However, sisig has a considerable amount of oil. Adding that spicy element to the dish gives you another complementing depth of flavor that cuts through the oil. 

Watermelon Sinigang

You are not Filipino when you do not like sinigang, a much less famous dish compared to the adobo, but just as much loved. Sinigang is a sour broth made with different kinds of veggies and pork. 

There are again many iterations of this dish, giving you different flavors and sensations varying from regions down to families. Add to that creativity and resourcefulness brought on by varying budget constraints and you have yourself another million reasons to love Filipino cuisine.

Manam’s watermelon sinigang, however paled in comparison to the other dishes offered in the menu. It’s the standard sinigang dish with a few chunks of watermelon added in. 

At first I did not even notice it was watermelon. The broth had boiled the delicate fruit so much so that it had lost its texture. The sourness of the sinigang made it so that you cannot taste a hint of sweetness or anything really. 

Creativity is surely a forte for Manam and so far I have been surprised and impressed with the dishes they had provided us. 

Gising Gising

Another dish that I have high praise for is gising gising. This dish consists of vegetables cooked in coconut milk. From its crunchy texture to its spiciness, you’re going to want more. 

Mountain Coffee Shake

Aside from the etag fried rice, Manam is also introducing a local-inspired drink – the Mountain Coffee Shake. If you love Benguet’s coffee, you’re going to like this!

Ube Sago

Want a drink and a dessert all in one? I’d recommend you try Manam’s ube sago. The sago complements the ube flavor so much that you’ll want to slurp all of it in one sitting. It was a bit too bad that the straw didn’t reach the bottom of the cup so I had to scoop them all out.

Bibingka de Leche

First on our list for dessert is the bibingka de leche. It’s a great treat for breakfast, lunch or dinner! Bibingka de leche is composed of bibingka and leche flan all in one dessert. 

Calamansi Tart

Get yourself a calamansi tart when dining in at Manam. This is a best seller for a reason. From its sour and sweet brûléed top, and crunchy crust, the calamansi tart is a must try!

Buko Pie

If you love anything that’s buko, Manam’s buko pie is to die for! The coconut crumble topping and coconut cream all come together to make this buko pie an unforgettable dessert.

However, as time passed I realized how much of a douche I am for not telling the whole world about it. So, along with my apology for trying to hide it. Here is an honest review of Agara Ramen.

Agara Ramen Experience

Now, Agara Ramen has been on my radar ever since it first debuted in Baguio. It’s a small hole in the wall type location. Following the same theme as ramen shops in Japan, the kitchen where they prepare the ramen is laid bare for customers to see. 

You’ll be seated in a table directly where they can drop off the ramen from their prep table to yours. Maybe there is a name for that kind of table. But I’m just going to say you should go there and see for yourself.

I honestly enjoyed the greetings that the cashier/ waitress, as well as, the cooks shout when you enter their shop. A ringing “Irashaimasen” to my ears sure enough hypes me up for the meal that is yet to be ordered.

At the entrance you’ll see a large screen projecting the menu items, this is where you place your order, as well as, pay. I find this strategy very efficient since you go there, pay, then eat to your heart’s content and just simply leave afterwards. 

The place is small. They can seat about 14 people at best. Nevertheless, the shop ensures that the tables are not cramped so that you don’t Muay Thai elbow your random seatmate when you are going for a big slurp.

I also love how they put just as much effort on their customers as they do with their ramen. Because of this, there are times when you have to wait in line outside, but the staff there works like clockwork able to serve amazing ramen at record speeds so you wouldn’t wait long. Also would like to add that if there is a queue outside of the shop, you can order in advance.

My one and only problem with this shop is the lack of restrooms. I’m sure they are aware of this problem already and are working for solutions for their beloved customers, but if you are planning to go there, relieve yourself first. Because once you go there and feel the urge to do business, you’ll be 100(seriously, I counted) steps from the nearest cafe that can accommodate you, that’s IF you buy from them or if you’re really good at persuading or drama. I really don’t know, it’s different from person to person. My wife was able to use their toilet for free while I didn’t.

Overall, the place will definitely make you feel like you are in a ramen shop in Japan from the first screams of welcome to the grateful bow and thank you when you leave. 

Food

I don’t know how to say this, but this may be another reason why I chickened out on writing a blog for this sooner. This blog compels me to be honest with the food and to my readers. With that said, it’s with a heavy heart that I have to admit. I really don’t know what the hell is on those bowls. All I know are the noodles and the magic. That’s it.

I know, I know, it’s a travesty not being able to single out ingredients when you are a “food blogger” but that’s just ramen for you. At this point I really do not know what else to talk about but I would like you guys to hear me out.

I fell in love with the shop’s Ramen master, not because of how he sexily prepares the ramens, but because of his passion that permeates through whatever he serves from that kitchen. It’s so rare nowadays to get to see a chef so intimate with his food.

Not putting the other cooks under the bus, they are just as amazing for being able to keep up with their boss. But, seriously, the dude IS the secret ingredient. 

Seeing him in the kitchen is art. How he cooks the noodles, takes a ladle-full of broth and graciously pours it back to the yukihira saucepan to check consistency (i guess?). How he plates the dishes and how he carefully puts every single component is a sight to behold.

I would have been standing there rolling my eyes to the back of my head in bliss if not for my wife keeping me in check.  I really do admire people who put their all in whatever they do. And the Ramen master at Agara Ramen does that. 

Guys, seriously, there are so many factors, processes, as well as, ingredients sourced from Japan that makes the ramen. Which is why I wouldn’t even bother to try and dissect it. There are just some foods that will leave you speechless. This ramen shop has them.

I have been there and back again. I have tried everything they have to offer from their chuka soba to their drinks. (Even tried tasting the hot towel too.)

If you are looking for something that will fill you up to the brim or just simply looking to share, then this might be the best choice for you. The rich broth as well as the abundant supply of noodles, pork and egg topped off with a slice of lemon to really bring the flavors together. This menu item might be an amazing introduction to a real tsukemen experience.

Tokusei Tsukemen (Omori “Sutairu” Style) – Spicy

Now, if you are looking for something a little bit on the playful side, then you can have it spicy as well. The difference between the non-spicy and the spicy is generally the spices that will be added throughout the cooking and plating process of the broth. The 4 kinds of chilis combine in a rich, spicy yet playfully mild delight. If you have that spicy itch, then there is no doubt, this, is something you should put on your food bucket list.

The weiner is a smokey amazing Japanese take on sausages. Matched with kewpie mayo as well as mustard, you will get amazing flavorful bombs with every bite.

This new side dish is already available for ordering. However, you won’t find it on the menu! It’s a part of their secret menu. Shhhh.

Agara Ramen is a small hole-in-the-wall location that you should try when you are in Baguio. The menu is small and they do not have a restroom but they provide the best quality of food and care there is. They also have a rockstar ramen sauce boss who listens to every feedback and is a treat to watch! Food is astonishing, ambiance is just as you’d expect it – amazing! Staff is as accomodating and you surely leave satisfied but craving for more!

Agara Ramen is one of my most adored treasures here in Baguio. And it’s time I pass the map on to you. I hope you enjoy it. I know I did. :3

From noodles to peking duck, you can find the best authentic Chinese food in King Chef Seafood Restaurant. We recently had the chance to try the food from the main branch in Banawe St. Quezon City and here’s my review of the place.

Our Recommendations

King Chef is a restaurant that has way too many things to offer. I mean, it’s really overwhelming if it’s your first time! So lucky you, I’ve listed some of the foods I would like you to try during your first visit.

Spicy Sizzling Squid

Did you know that a majority of the population have never tasted a really nicely cooked squid? Well, with King Chef Seafood’s spicy sizzling squid, you will surely be surprised! The sizzling squid is one of the best dishes to try for sure!

Its slight spiciness matched with a generous sauce and tender, juicy squid just takes the cake. Match that with rice and you will be pleased. This is hands down one of my favorites.

Peking Duck

And this is where the rest of the bones are…

The peking duck is one of the more premiere dishes served in this fine establishment. It is something you order if you really want to know what King Chef and their kitchen can really do. It’s a juicy, tender duck that is in a league of its own. I see them carried in boxes for people to take home and I have tasted the dish myself.

All I can say about it is that it is phenomenal. I’ve been honing my palette for foods and I can tell you, they put a massive amount of work, devotion and care creating this masterpiece. They can prepare it for you in two or three ways. Just enough choices to keep you coming for more! 

Hototay Soup

Soup is the best starting dish in every kitchen. It’s an amazing appetizer as it coats your stomach for the feast that’s yet to come. King Chef’s Hototay soup is a colorful selection that you might want to try.

It has bits and pieces of wanton, shrimp, and pork innards, all of which are dancing to a medley of flavorful vegetables like carrots, mushrooms and bell peppers.

Suahe with Salted Eggs

Now if you are looking for something more in defiance with the norm, then the Suahe with Salted Eggs is the dish for you. It consists of large, plumpy prawns doused in salted egg batter and deepfried to crispy “just right” perfection.

It’s a whole shelled prawn that you eat from head to tail. Don’t even try to remove the shell or you’ll miss the salted egg goodness. Everything is just edible!

King Style Crab Rice

Now, if you are wondering about what kind of rice you should pair with all these delicious, scrumptious foods, then might we suggest you try their king style crab rice. It’s a bowl of delectable rice served with a whole crab for you to crush and love. Yes, you read that right! You get the whole crab package – with shells and everything. 

Roasted Milk Tea/Matcha Milk Tea

Drinks? Better yet, MILK TEAAAAA! (Hello milk tea lovers!) You should give any of these two a try. Not going to spoil you, but they are absolutely amazing! Also, no straws, be mindful of mother earth.

This is a small thing I appreciate with King Chef restaurants and their willingness to commit to nature. (Their take out packages are all biodegradable, too!)

Mapo Tofu

Mapo Tofu is a really interesting dish that I personally love. It is basically somewhat like a taho with spicy tomato as sauce and minced meat for sago. This dish is a body warming meal that can further satisfy your spicy itch. Paired with rice or other dishes, it really brings a different depth of flavor you can enjoy.

Taiwan Petchay with 3 Kinds of Mushrooms

Of course, if you are not into that meat stuff, then you can enjoy their abundant selections of mushrooms. For me, I enjoyed the Taiwan petchay with 3 kinds of mushrooms a lot. Make sure to take a piece of the different mushrooms and petchay in one bite. I assure you they taste wonderful!

X.O. Siomai

Don’t let this small simple and basic dish fool you. The X.O. Siomai packs a punch fitting of the term “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” or better yet “Don’t judge a dumpling by its wrapper.” The XO siomai is filled with tons of seafood surprise. You will never dine here without ordering it on the side. You can also order this from their King Chef Dimsum Kitchen Branches.

Salted Egg Bomb

If you love King Chef Dimsum Kitchen’s buchi like my wife does, you’re going to go gaga over the salted egg bomb. It’s like an evolved buchi which packs a bomb of sweet goodness!

Imperial Blooms

For artsy yummy food that will make you want to take gazillion photos of, the imperial blooms is a must-try! It’s the most beautiful food I’ve ever seen. Plus, if you want to give it as a gift to someone, better order beforehand. You can even ask them to write something on it or order a bigger size. Just make sure you order earlier as preparation for this beauty takes a long time.

Ambience 

Entering the place, you will suddenly get the feeling that they cater to a lot of people. From solo, a date and families of four to a company of a hundred, you can rest assured that they can offer a venue that can match well with your needs.

The place is beautiful, filled with square tables as well as lazy susans (a round table, basically like the knights of Camelot only instead of swords, they lay down foods and there is also that small circle table in the middle which spins around so you can pick food from the other side) ornaments, lanterns, red cloths atop white, the place screams Chinese and honestly, all the decors and furniture complement one another to bring you that authentic Chinese dining experience!

Customer Service

One thing I would like to really nail close to home is the fact that the people working at King Chef, from the servers to the kitchen staffs are quite accommodating and caring. The customer service sets the standards for other restaurants.

Waiters are assigned their specific tables. From the start to the end of your meal, they will not leave your side. They will be providing you with all your needs during the gastronomic experience as well as give you an in-depth description and explanation of the dishes you wish to try. It’s the best personalized service there is!

It might be awkward at first having a person standing right beside you. However, it’s a reassuring feeling to have somebody there to accommodate your need whether that be water, your extra order or your bill. This just makes the King Chef experience a whole lot better!

This to me is why I put the King chef at a level above their peers. The amount of effort they put into taking care of you is just heartwarming.

• Get a Smart Diner Privilege Card to get more savings – King Chef offers a Smart Diner privilege card that comes with crazy ton of perks! You get lots of free stuff, too! So if you’re ever in a King Chef restaurant, better get your hands on one! Seriously. They currently have an ongoing promo today where you can buy a box of peking duck for just P1,000+ instead of the regular price of P2,000+ if you have the card!! 
• Go during happy hours – Depending on the King Chef branch you’re going to, better check their happy hours before visiting. During this time, you’re going to get promo prices for several items on the menu! If you’re on a budget or just plain want to eat more, this is a budget tip that you should memorize by heart.

After constantly nagging and pestering my wife to go check it out, she finally caved in and we were on our way.

Now the thing that I always promote here in my blog is food honesty which is something that I stand by regardless of whether it’s a free meal or not.

When we got to the location, I was honestly underwhelmed. It was a small hole in the wall type of restaurant with very few tables and a single waiter manning the cashier. Tables were shaky and it wasn’t as classy as you expect it to be looking at their front sign. I was underwhelmed but I got over it real quick after looking around and taking the whole place in. 

Other tables were filled with laughter as barkadas hang out over a meal. Students coming in to see if they can afford the prices end up taking a seat and leaving content with their purchase. 

I felt a bit disappointed at myself for setting expectations that really don’t matter that much. I for one can be found in these kinds of small hole-in-the-wall places in Baguio.

So we sat ourselves as the waiter/cashier came in with all of their best sellers for us to try. Needless to say, I was impressed with the presentation. The Iron pan’s dishes were served in, well, iron pans. And it was piping hot. 

They served us with their chicken cordon bleu, chicken franchezka, porterhouse steak, sizzling sisig and finally their best of the best sellers, the prime rib eye.

 Needless to say, I was dying to dig in. The food tasted so good that I did not mind the steak being well-done. The complementary sauce was exquisite – a smoky peppery gravy that just steals the show if not complement the steak perfectly. I also admired the cheese that accompanied the chicken, it provided a creamy depth to the crunchy and juicy chicken which my wife enjoyed too much as she ate it with rice after she was finished with the chicken. 

The cordon bleu was perfect in every which way. The chicken was tender and juicy and the cheese came oozing out hot. I could say breading was a mouthful but with the sauce, you really wouldn’t mind the extra surface area. 

The chicken franchezka did not stand out that much to me. It was just small pieces of chicken cut up and deep-fried to a nice crunch. I enjoyed it with both the steak gravy as well as the cheese though.

The porterhouse also tasted great! The cook was good and I really can’t find any fault in the dish. 

The prime ribeye took my undivided attention when it was served. It was cooked well-done but I really did not mind that much. It was amazing. Paired off with the gravy it was heavenly. I really do find myself coming back to this place just for this dish alone.

After all of these dishes were served and after enjoying and eating to my heart’s content, the kind waiter came with another dish that has stolen my heart and changed the standard for sizzling sisig. 

The sisig was a bit late to the party. But after a single taste, I knew I wanted more. Sure enough, it was worth the heavy stomach haul back to our Airbnb.

The sisig was smokey.  Paired with the rice, the mellow yet tangy flavor of every bite made me moan in pleasure, good thing we were the only one left in the restaurant because I went down explicitly on that dish with no shame. Maybe it’s the cowboy influence that we Benguet people have, but it tasted hella awesome, sweet, amazing, 10 out of 10 will explicitly eat again. The sisig was in a league of its own. And I fell in love with it. 

So that’s my take on the Iron Pan Steakhouse. Come for the steak, leave weak in the knees because of the sisig. :3

With all the choices around from pizza to pita you can find and try, there is one throne that has yet to be taken as a favorite of mine (until now).

Chinese cuisine has been a really complicated place for me to stay and enjoy. For one, there has always been only one Chinese restaurant in Baguio that people go to when they feel it, so there’s not much competition for comparison and improvement.

Other reasons also include the fact that I don’t know a single thing about how a Chinese dish should taste like. I just take it at face value and go along with it.

A few days earlier, we were invited to King Chef Dimsum Kitchen, a dumpling haven, offering an affordable yet handmade selection of dumplings, stir fries and a lot more Chinese cuisine.

Of course, I would never pass on a chance of sinking my teeth in new tastes. So my wife and I went to give it a try.

Entering the place felt like we were somewhere expensive. We were under the impression that it was a restaurant where you come in with a full wallet and empty stomach, then get out with an empty wallet and full stomach kind of situation. I was hesitant.

This might be more than we can afford I said to myself as the accommodating and happy waiters ushered us into our seats. I was restless. I pushed through regardless. 

It’s something new, and I really wanted to see what they have to offer so I took their menu and started browsing. Eventually, my frown and uncertainty turned into a smile and disbelief. Everything on the menu was affordable!

I was flabbergasted, I don’t know what that word means but it was the word that came to mind while enjoying every bits and pieces of food on our table.

I personally enjoyed the X. O. siomai, mapo tofu, beef hofan, as well as their hakaw. The wrappers were springy and fresh to the taste giving me the feeling that it was hand-made.

They said that the dumplings are made in-house which is a fancy way of saying they wake up early to make hundreds if not thousands of these. Pretty awesome, eh? 

I am a sucker for everything home-made so knowing this gave me a sense of ease. Like a child eating his favorite dish (I swear my feet were swinging back and forth).

Sure you can purchase 4 pieces of siomai for about 25 pesos. But that will never taste as good as the siomai they offer at King Chef Dimsum Kitchen.

They do not hold anything back and that for me was enough to consider this place a new favorite of mine.

Same goes for their rice dishes. Each and everything they offer here is authentic Chinese cuisine.

It might not be as flashy as what you see on YouTube, but I can assure you, the taste is just as amazing. 

Aside from those dishes, I also have a sweet spot for mapo tofu (a sweet, spicy and sour dish) that can be enjoyed solo or with rice.

The thing to note about their mapo tofu is the fact that they use potato starch which is leagues better and more enjoyable than corn or even cassava starch.

I enjoyed every slurp, bite and chew with this dish. The small amounts of mushroom hiding behind waves of ground meat really levels out the dish.

All in all, I enjoyed every moment of our meal there. We loved it so much that after 2 days we found ourselves coming back.

So I guess it’s true when they say, King Chef has a way of keeping you coming back for more!

• Buchi – The best buchi in town!
• Crispy duck wanton – A delicious crunchy, deep fried dumpling with pieces of duck bathed in hoisin sauce
• Soyed wanton – Exceptionally good with rice
• Imperial Blooms – Amazingly delectable jelly with a breathtaking instagrammable design that you’ll have a hard time eating! It’s one of those foods that are so deliciously beautiful you just want to take it home as decor.

We’re planning on going back to King Chef every once in a while (maybe 2 to 3 times a week! Hahahaha )to try all of their menu and updating our recommended food list so keep an eye out for that!

BUDGET TIP:  Go during their happy hour, 2:00 to 5:00 PM and 8:30 to 10:00 PM (starting December 1), to get big discounts on their dumplings and more. You can get P130 dishes for only P80 and P95 dishes at P65!! That’s A LOT of money saved.

Regardless of all your efforts and love, there still will be that moment where you are going to bite a mouthful of chicken meat and feel as if you are going to choke when you swallow it.

That’s why I wasn’t all that excited when my wife, Johanes, told me about 24 chicken. I didn’t look it up expecting it to be just your everyday fried chicken tossed around with different varying sauces, it turns out I was half right.

Searching for the restaurant, we found ourselves in a crowd which turned out to be a queue for this humble yet obviously busy shop. The orders were coming in as quickly as they could complete them.

The waves of hungry and busy students kept coming and as soon as we were nearing the shop my nose felt a wonderful and alluring scent. At that moment I knew that this was going to be a whole lot different from the chicken shops I was used to. The nearer we got to the cashier the more my mouth watered.

We placed our order and within minutes 2 boxes of chicken savory goodness were placed in our table.

I dove right in. The chicken was tender, juicy and tasted out of this world. I could eat a lot but never in my dreams would I eat a whole chicken’s worth without batting an eye and it was very comforting until I noticed something halfway through the box.

The chicken had no bones! All meat and skin carefully fried and tossed in amazingly unique sauces. My mind was blown.

You see, when you cook chicken the most tender and juicy parts are always wrapped in bones. Compare the difference between the chicken breasts and the chicken thighs. The thighs are juicy regardless of how wrong you can cook it, while the breasts are mostly dry almost all the time, even when you add it in a stew.

I was enjoying every hot juicy bite without me noticing and that in it of itself stands as a testament to how good the chickens really are.

I was truly amazed by how well they thought ahead. The portions were small bite-sized chickens that can cook fairly quickly and would have more surface areas where the sauce can coat giving you a more flavorful bite every single time.

That’s why they can complete that many orders of chicken in record time without the staff really breaking a sweat.

A regular chicken leg with the thigh might take somewhere about 20-30 minutes to fully cook through since the bones take a considerable amount of time to heat up and cook the blood within the bones too.

Taking out the bones from the equation as well as cutting the pieces of chicken meat up to a more manageable portion gives you piping hot amazingly cooked tender chicken within 5 minutes.

I was honestly blown away by how well they manage the chicken. I never really thought about it that much but now that I had to think about it, It’s genius. I love the chickens there and my mouth waters every single time I think about the Jack Daniels chicken.

Regardless I will find myself back in that store every chance I get, and it is honestly up there in ranks for me. Give it a try and tell me about your experience I would definitely want to know what you think about 24 Chicken.

Needless to say, after taking a long trip to get there, I couldn’t find myself to be impressed of the décor and the irresistible comforting vibe the place exudes. Their seats were in disarray and the first floor was closed. The profanity!

However, if you ask me if I wanted to visit Bodhi Library and Cafe again, I would definitely say “absolutely.”

Bodhi Library and Cafe Review

Bodhi Mind and Body might not be for the hungry, but it sure is for everybody else. Like I said before, the place exudes an alluring, calming feeling that would just simply have you melt in your seat, the whole theme is spot on, books on the drawers lined on the walls, shoes, and slippers adorn the entrance, mats and chairs scattered everywhere but none ever felt out-of-place and I just couldn’t stop calming down with the florescent shining over us with its warm orangey, retro tone that helps the varnished wood sparkle even better.

The place is absolutely stunning. I could vividly recall me and my wife talking over how we wanted to build a house inspired by this beautifully crafted place as we sit and ate our waffles while a construction worker awkwardly stares at us through the window. Yes, there’s a construction nearby.

We took our time there in reading books and casually talking over our caramel and blueberry drizzled waffles. And I really did not spare any reservations in taking pictures of this fine venue.

At first I really did not understand the hype that came with this place. Sure it is “Insta-absolutely-grammable” but I mostly review food, and I really can’t review them this way. If possible I would go there every day and made sure I had a taste of everything they had to in their menu before handing down the final verdict. But being a traveler, with schedules and constraints, it’s really hard to find a decent conclusion to that experience.

Sure, I could start off with clarifying that we came there under the worst conditions, taking them off guard with bad timing. Visiting after 2 typhoons have just passed by. But I really can’t let that pass. There needs to be food that matches the beauty or compliments the character of your Bodhi café at all times. Maybe they were lazy, maybe it was their way to salvage loses during the bad weather, maybe.

Look, I am going to take a “lose” for this review. Bodhi Mind and Body Shop was simply not at their best when we visited, but should you ask me if you should go to Bodhi Café? Definitely! But take into consideration the dates and times posted on their Facebook page. I heard that everything from the staff to the food is magnificent during sunny, dry days. However, they might become underhanded during the rainy, cold, seasons.

Side note: Although this is not the Bodhi café’s fault, we strongly advise taking insect repellent lotions if you go there during the rainy seasons. There are a lot of mosquitoes that can swarm you in seconds around the place.

Turon

Turon is a sweet and crunchy dish that you will definitely enjoy during your stay. Be it served on the streets or even on restaurants. You definitely have to grab a taste of this. The turon has different recipes and ingredients depending on where you are but there is one thing they have in common and that is they taste absolutely heavenly. A turon is generally a wrapped and deep fried banana. Other variations have sweet potatoes and some even have “Langka” or Jackfruit. Lumpia

Now, what would happen if you use the same wrapper from a turon but with the choice of vegetables and matched with chili vinegar? Well, the Filipinos have it all figured out. This is the salty version of a turon. Although another soft introduction to the world of Filipino street food, you will soon find out that they are leagues different from the turon that people enjoy. The lumpia is composed of beans, carrots, sprouted beans and minced meat wrapped in a “lumpia wrapper” and then deep fried to crispy perfection. Of course, there are different variations of these depending on where you are but you will often come across these vegetables more often.

Banana Q

Now what would happen if you take out the “lumpia wrappers” in a turon? Well, you will end up with a Filipino street food called Banana Q. Banana Q is made up of hard species of banana, relative to the Philippines. Deep fried alongside sugar, the high temperature of the oil forces the sugar to stick to the banana and it will stay there until it is tender. The burnt brown sugar would often leave a sour after- taste, but it will eventually turn into an addiction. We asked multiple people who visited the Philippines and a majority of them wanted the taste of Banana Q again.

Binatog

Boy, Filipinos love their desserts way too much. The binatog is a white corn boiled or steamed till it becomes almost syrupy in texture. The corn is then served with generous amounts of white sugar, evaporated milk, and coconut shavings. In hindsight, this bare, white boring looking Filipino street food might not even look appetizing, but take a spoonful and you will be swept off your feet.

There is also a salty variation of binatog, but Filipinos generally prefer the sweeter one.

Ginataan

Another Filipino street food to look out for is the infamous ginataan. This is a piping hot sweet porridge made from a mix of coconut milk, rice balls, tapioca, chunks of fruits and other ingredients. You will typically enjoy this during the cold, rainy mornings since it just hits the spot providing you with ample warmth as well as the sweetness that will surely perk you right up.

It is important that you blow the ginataan diligently before you take a bite because the burn it would cause to your tongue might ruin the experience for you and your food trip.

Taho

Now let’s look at the 2nd most famous Filipino street food, the taho. Taho is a soft tofu cut and put in a cup. It is then sweetened with a sugary sweet syrup and then topped with a generous amount of tapioca. The tofu is so soft that you can just suck it up with the straw provided.

You can find this Filipino street food on the streets and if not, look for peddlers who scream “TAHOOO” in the morning. To buy one, just grab the peddler’s attention. This tastes extremely silky and sweet. The small portions of close to melting tofu mends well with the accompanying syrup ensuring that there is not a single boring sip.

Pro tip: you should raise the straw and place it in the middle of the cup so as not to let it touch the bottom when you sip. This ensures equal parts of both syrup and tofu and tapioca for your enjoyment. Trust us, you will enjoy it a little bit more if you do.

Buko

Have you ever had the chance to drink coconut from its husk? Here in the Philippines, you can find these all around markets and should always accept the invitation to purchase it. Filipino buko is one of the tastiest coconuts around the world, these are sweet and energizing.

Palabok

Another hearty dish that is served at the comfort of the streets, palabok is a noodle dish that is accompanied by a fishy thick orange sauce. Topped with dried shrimp and chicharon, you will surely enjoy the medley of texture that you will experience. True they might be called “Dirty Ice Cream” but that name does not do this beloved children’s dessert justice. Do not let that push you away from trying it. We added this on the more challenging Filipino street food since the nickname actually is bad enough to deter foreigners from purchasing it.

Pro Tip: Have it served in a bun, trust us, you wouldn’t want to lose even a single drop of this ice cream goodness.

Fish balls and other kinds of balls

Mostly sold during afternoons and evenings, these flour based goodness are deliciously alluring. Simply sitting and cooking in hot oil, people will come with bamboo BBQ sticks on hand and pick them off. Dunking them in a their choice sauce and eating them then and there.

You can choose between a spicy vinegar, a sweet sauce or a sweet and spicy sauce. Either way, they all taste phenomenal.

If you’re more of an adventurer type, don’t forget to try the balut.

Throughout my time of eating and indulging in scrumptious foods. I really never had a soft spot for Korean style barbecue or what people say Samgyeopsal. Seated in a table that has a burner in the middle, you are then provided or in some cases allowed to pick out things you want to eat ranging from different kinds of meat cuts or side dishes. They will then fire up the burner and leave you to it to cook and grill your food.

As for me and my first-time experience in eating Samgyeopsal, I was dumbfounded. Why would I cook the food? Was that the gimmick? Back then, it cost just as much as 2 kgs of meat. If I wanted to cook my own dinner, I would have done it at home already. 

After giving it multiple tries and eventually failing to find the purpose of going to a restaurant to cook your own food, I swore to never step into a Korean BBQ restaurant in my life. I eventually gave it another shot when my wife asked me to dinner. 

Fantastic Chef Malate

Que in the Fantastic Chef. As soon as I entered, the scent of thin-sliced meat with no salt or pepper touching the grill compelled me to hiss the same way a cat would when threatened. But since I was hungry, I just surrendered and tried to enjoy it. 

I was honestly amazed at how clean and tidy things are, each table is equipped with a suction that sucks the smoke out of the grill so that you do not have to navigate through the smoke to find your table. 

Friendly Staffs

The staff wore smiles and greeted me diligently. And although I looked like I disliked the place, they made me feel welcome. 

Cooking the Korean BBQ 

Another thing that I found quite peculiar is that their grills are actual grills. I was half-expecting a gas stove atop a circle plate where you put the meat in but noooo. You actually get to cook your meat with charcoal unlike most of the Korean BBQ restaurants I went to in the past. And just like that, I was interested with the Samgyeopsal this time around. 

Servings

As they started serving generous amounts of meat, I was slowly getting excited by how well they were presented and separated. I should also point out the fact that the meat that was served at room temperature. Again, unlike other Korean BBQ restaurants who serve you frozen meat. Side dishes were generous and very light.

I thoroughly enjoyed every piece of meat that touched my tongue. They were quality meat paired off with a smoky scent that complimented every dip and sauce provided. The side dishes were terrific. The cooking process was not a hassle at all and get this; they monitor your grill and change it as much as possible. The suction gave us a lot of breathing room, and most of all, the quality of their service never failed us. 

Overall

Korean BBQ is not just about cooking your own meat and taking in cough inducing smoke. It is about keeping your attention to the things in front of you, enjoying dishes in small portions and realizing the beauty in someone’s company through a long and drawn out eating process. My wife and I talked about a lot of things while she greedily took meat that I was cooking. Most times, when we ate out, we ate the dish and left. Here, we took our time, set down the bowls of rice and talked about our adventures together through the years as we put the next batch of meat and wait for it to cook.

I would never have changed my mind about Korean BBQ if it weren’t for my visit to Fantastic Chef. I would be forever grateful and always looking forward to another food trip down memory lane on the tables of this amazing place.
